Generally, the organ date can be bracketed into 4 years, (55-59, 60-63, 63-68, 69-74) as each of these year groups has a definite sound caused by Hammond component changes. An organ today however, is unlikely to sound like these as such, since it will have degraded over the years. The Hammond/Leslie age determination list was initially compiled by BevisPeters, and is currently maintained by RickPrevallet. It is basically a list of dates and serial numbers for various Hammond and Leslie models. It also provides guidelines to determine, generally, the age of a Hammond, based on certain features and characteristics that changed throughout the model history.

It is not unusual to have situations where a new Hammond Organ owner may not readily be able to identify the instrument he or she has. This page has been designed to help individuals find the model and serial number plate on the Hammond Organ instrument. Also one might make a determination by comparing to a picture of a unit or one might eliminate a model possibility just by looking at a picture.
In the case of instruments made back in the mid to late 1930s, the serial plate probably has the Hammond Instrument Company as the manufacturer name along with the serial number on a metal plate. The plate is most often located on a shelf in the rear of the organ or in the lower right hand corner of the cabinet in the back of the instrument. In the case where an instrument has a rear cover, it may be necessary to carefully remove the cover and locate the metal plate on the lower or upper shelf inside the organ. The aforementioned locations were applicable for instruments manufactured from 1935 all the way into the mid to late 1960's. Also up to that time, the serial and name plates were either a metal or heavy plastic material. In the late 1960s and on through the 1985 production, the year when the company went out of business, the name plate including the model and serial number innformation along with the Hammond Organ Company name and 4200 Diversey Avenue address in Chicago was located under the lower keyboard assembly, acccessible and viewable from the lower front of the instrument. The only exceptions would have been for the E-series, the H-series, X-66 and the X-77 series. On these models the plate remained on the lower right hand corner of the rear of the instruments. There are gaps in the representations shown below. We will try to fill the gaps as time goes on. We would be thankful and honored to include in our identification section a picture from you of any of the models that are missing. They are identified and are without picture above the model. Just e-mail the picture,as an attachment, to us. Thanks in advance for your help and assistance. As this section expands there will probably be some more instruments that we will not be able to come up with a suitable photograph for. Keep checking us out; we would appreciate your help.
